The Brief
The existing garden was in a tired and fragmented condition, comprising an old shed, areas of artificial lawn, a concrete base, and dated porcelain paving. These elements created a disjointed layout with little cohesion or sense of design clarity, resulting in a space that was underused and visually uninspiring.
The client wanted a complete transformation of the garden into a contemporary, well-structured outdoor space with a more considered and elevated feel. The key ambition was to introduce a sense of style and sophistication while improving functionality and usability.
A central requirement of the brief was to create a clear distinction between different zones within the garden, particularly separating structured planting areas from an open lawn space. At the same time, the garden needed to remain practical and low maintenance, with durable materials and a planting scheme that would provide year-round interest without requiring intensive upkeep.
Overall, the vision was for a clean, modern garden design that felt cohesive and refined, with strong architectural structure, subtle layering, and a calm, elegant atmosphere suitable for everyday use and entertaining.
Design Approach
The design focused on stripping back the existing elements to create a simplified, architectural layout with a strong sense of order and clarity. By introducing a restrained material palette and clear zoning, the garden was redefined into distinct yet harmonious areas.
A new Italian porcelain patio was selected to provide a sleek, contemporary foundation, while horizontal Venetian-style timber slatted fencing was used to enclose the space and add a refined architectural rhythm around the perimeter.
Steel-edged planting beds were introduced to bring precision and contrast, framing the softer green elements and reinforcing the clean geometry of the design. A clover lawn was chosen as a naturalistic, low-maintenance alternative to traditional turf, softening the overall composition while maintaining practicality.
The result is a balanced composition of hard and soft landscaping, where each element has been carefully considered to create a calm, modern, and highly curated garden space.
